Baiquan Mountain: Beijing’s Secret Spring Mountain

Baiquan Mountain (meaning “mountain of hundreds of springs”) is a 2A-level scenic spot in Huairou, roughly 80 km from downtown Beijing.

It is famous for hundreds of natural springs, connected pools and waterfalls, plus lush forests and distinctive granite rock formations.

Recently I took a day trip to Baiquan Mountain and enjoyed it very much.

After passing through the entrance gate, if you wish to hike up the mountain from its base, cross the first small bridge once you enter the scenic area to start your climb. The trail is a little steep at the beginning, though the steep section does not last long.

Alternatively, for an easier route, keep walking forward until you reach a pier. There you can take a boat ride across a small lake to the other side of the mountain. The boat ride costs CNY 8 per person and lasts roughly 3 minutes.

From the pier, you may continue along trails running alongside countless pools, waterfalls and suspension bridges. I was there on a weekday. The whole scenic area was extremely quiet; I probably met only three other visitors. It made for a wonderfully relaxing and pleasant outing.

On your way back, you can either take the return boat or hike the mountain trail next to the pier.

If you have visited Beijing many times and are looking for a quiet off-the-beaten-path spot to yourself, this is a great choice.
