On April 26, as one of the most distinctive cultural night markets in Beijing, the Panjiayuan Flea Market Night Market is about to undergo a comprehensive upgrade. Starting from now, in addition to the existing Wednesday and Friday night markets, a new Saturday intangible cultural heritage (ICH) themed night market will be introduced, achieving the goal of "Panjiayuan Market open every day of the year, with night markets on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays."
The night session of Panjiayuan Flea Market can be traced back to the early "ghost markets." Over time, the cultural aspect has gradually become the main feature here. It is not only a haven for antique and curio enthusiasts but has also attracted many young people who come to experience the flea market culture, giving rise to the "Panjiayuan Cultural Night Market." Both local residents and tourists visiting Beijing flock to the "Panjiayuan Cultural Night Market" to experience this unique culture firsthand.
Since its inception, the Panjiayuan Night Market has been beloved by the public for its unique cultural atmosphere and diverse range of products. Statistics show that the average number of visitors per night market session exceeds 10,000, with young people accounting for more than 60% of the attendees. It has become a shining card of Beijing's night economy.
The newly added Saturday night market will focus on intangible cultural heritage themes, recruiting vendors of various ICH handicrafts. On the first additional Saturday night market on April 26, Panjiayuan Market specially invited ICH inheritors to perform shadow puppetry. In the future, a variety of display and performance activities will be organized around different ICH themes.
